Whether it is because of a desire not to know, a concern over privacy, or an unwillingness to be intrusive, there has been startling research emerging that parents just don’t know what’s going on with their children as much as they did in the past.

None of the College Prep staff is old enough to have children entering college in the fall, even mathematically. Yet every year around this time we are treated with a slice of the bittersweet pie primarily reserved for the parents of these young adults we send off into the world and beyond our Teen Center’s doors.

Did you know that over 47,000 children in New York City could lose access to child care and after-school programs next year?  Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed budget includes major cuts to these services — including a 62% reduction in Out of School Time (OST) after-school programs in Manhattan.  As a provider of these crucial programs, we support the Campaign for Children to help raise awareness of these devastating cuts.

But our staff encouraged her to join Global Girls, an international service learning program. Since the trip last summer, Feng not only speaks up in class, but she’s improved her grades and says that she might want to become a teacher someday! Read her full story.

You’ve read the books; you’ve watched the trailers; and now The Hunger Games movie is finally opening tomorrow! The anticipation has been building since the first sneak peak was released several months ago, which prompted my friends and I to begin a countdown for the movie adaptation of the popular series. I am rooting for Jennifer Lawrence and hope she nails her role as Katniss Everdeen, the main character in the books. Katniss, a passionate young woman who bravely stands up for her younger sister, fights alongside extremely powerful men, and uses her knowledge of hunting and archery until the bitter end, is an excellent role model for other young girls, especially during our agency’s cause of the month for March: women & girls empowerment.
