Recently, when I logged on to Facebook for the usual updates – seeing what people are up to, browsing some photos, maybe posting a comment or two – I came across an unexpected friend request. It was from one of my clients.
What to do??

This week’s round-up of notable links features Lower East Side art galleries, technology in education, fitness routines, and combating childhood obesity at a very young age:
“Education Tech: Skype’s Vision for A More Connected Classroom” (Mashable)
“Strength for Running” (14th & 1st)
“Lower East Side Galleries Plan Grand Opening Night” (The Lo-Down)
“Study: Obesity Prevention Should Focus on Day Care” (Web MD)

When the kids in our youth development programs learned that their program was at risk of closing, they filmed this adorable video to, quite literally, keep the lights on after school! Watch the video and learn how you can help save these programs.

Our kids at P.S. 140′s youth development program are crazy about NBA superstar Kemba Walker, so much so that their program director (and blogger) Kendra Newburgh wrote her first post about him, and it made it on Kemba’s Facebook Page this week! Next, Kendra and the kids filmed a video asking Kemba to come visit them — to teach them the “Kemba” dance, among other things. Today, the video also made it on his page! Help us get Kemba to visit our program — please “like” and comment on the Facebook post! Or, just do the Kemba… do the Kemba…

So, the Educational Alliance has asked me to be a “blogger” – but a therapist blogging? The idea first hit me as absurd. In a field where privacy is paramount, there are limitations to the way I can share my work experiences. In counseling, thoughts are shared in the privacy of a room with a closed door and a sound machine swooshing to keep our words within those walls. Confidentiality is key; paperwork is carefully locked away.

Every week, we’ll share a round-up of links and articles relating to the Lower East Side, East Village, and issues that we care about, like education, health & wellness, the arts, and much more. Enjoy and happy Friday!
“Art Worth Seeing on the Lower East Side” (The Lo-Down) – The best gallery shows in the ‘hood, according to our own Audrey Hope, coordinator of our Young Artist Program.
“City Council Members Share Their Objections to Child Care Cuts” (NY1) – Elected officials show support for after school programs. Want to help save them? Check out Save After School Now.
“Mind the Age Gap” (The Local East Village) – Interesting perspective on the state of aging in the East Village. What do you think?
“The Boys & Girls Club & High Tech? They Mix” (New York Times) – The 150-year old organization is focusing on social media to support its mission. We love that!
