Every morning, my great-grandmother boarded the trolley from Williamsburg, to make her way to 197 East Broadway – The Educational Alliance – to take a sewing class that eventually helped her secure a millinery shanghai job on the Lower East Side. Sixty-six years later, I boarded the F train to the same place.
