Our latest round-up of links and articles features a number of issues that are very important to the Educational Alliance, our clients and staff: saving child care and after school programs for low-income families; the growing homeless population in New York City (and how we can help); and the experience of becoming a new parent. Hope you enjoy them!

Did you know that 113,553 homeless people slept in city shelters last year, an 8% increase from the previous year? This month, we’re highlighting homelessness and its effects on children, adults and seniors across New York City. Stay tuned to our Twitter and Facebook for facts and info on programs that are helping the homeless, like our Pride Sites and Project ORE. In place of our weekly round-up, here are two recent articles on homelessness and kids:
“For A Homeless Child, A Long Ride to 4th Grade” (New York Times)
“Homeless Kids in Public Schools: Interview with Marian Riner, School Social Worker” (Huffington Post)

This fall, I’m really struggling to stay positive. Between the wave of attacks on women in Brooklyn (where I live) and what feels like a huge increase in the number of homeless people on the streets and subways of Manhattan, I am afraid tough times are looming for the city I love.

This week’s round-up of links covers early childhood/preschool, the arts in schools, health & wellness for teenagers, and yoga for addiction recovery. Enjoy!

Brenda Maysonet participated in a volunteer project in October 2010 through her job at Chubb Insurance. Since then, she has continued to volunteer monthly at our Project ORE, serving a Shabbat lunch to homeless, mentally ill and isolated Jewish senior citizens. In honor of the Jewish high holidays, we wanted to spotlight Brenda, a non-Jewish volunteer who has found inspiration from this program.
