We love the spring time weather here at PS 140! A perfect way to celebrate the new season is to learn about our environment. Earth Day is this Sunday, April 22nd and we will be celebrating on Monday, April 23rd. A great game we play – that combines fun and learning about keeping our Earth clean – is Recycling Relay.  Here’s how it works…

Spring is in the air, and Earth Day is just around the corner!  Our agency’s cause of the month for April is environmental sustainability. We “go green” in many of our programs throughout Downtown Manhattan. For example, the 14th Street Y has focused on greening over the past three years and even ran a Green Song Contest for the community last year — check out the above music video from our winners! And stayed tuned to our Twitter and Facebook for green updates, all month long.

On October 24th, the nation will celebrate its first annual Food Day, an event sponsored by Center for Science in the Public Interest to raise awareness about sustainable food production and celebrate healthy whole foods. While many of us have heard a thing or two about diet-related diseases, factory farming, farm subsidies, or world hunger, it can be difficult to wrap our heads around how these issues interconnect, and even tougher to figure out how we, as individuals, can make an impact. To date, the best advice I’ve found on the subject has been from Dr. Marion Nestle, an author, food policy activist, and nutrition professor at New York University. Dr. Nestle says, “vote with your vote… and vote with your fork.”

The 14th Street Y has been sharing a lot of greening stories and advice on their blog and Facebook page lately, in preparation for their big OPENgreenHOUSE this month. We wanted to share a great post by Becky Skoff, Manager of LABA and the Theater, about how they’ve been reusing, repurposing and recycling wood. Here’s an excerpt:

For the entire 2010-2012 season, no wood was thrown out from our theater. We collected it, and the wood has been used by our preschool for art projects, to build shelving in our art room, and for art installations in our lobby.

Exactly one month from today, the 14th Street Y is hosting their annual Open House, which heads to greener pastures this year! In addition to the fabulous & FREE concerts, activities and fun that’s traditionally featured, the Y will be celebrating greening successes from the past year, and educating the community on the easy ways to lessen their carbon footprint.
