Carl (far left) with students from a previous graduating class.

None of the College Prep staff is old enough to have children entering college in the fall, even mathematically. Yet every year around this time we are treated with a slice of the bittersweet pie primarily reserved for the parents of these young adults we send off into the world and beyond our Teen Center’s doors.
Ten years ago this month, I was wrapping up my senior year of college: turning in my thesis, saying goodbye to good friends… and realizing that I probably should have started applying for jobs back in January.
I got lucky. Through a connection made the previous summer, a dream job fell into my lap. 2012’s newly minted college graduates might not be so lucky – a recently released study says that half of recent college graduates are either unemployed or underemployed. It’s tough, reading statistics like that, to wax poetic about the importance of a college education – and yet, that’s exactly what I’m about to do.

As students across the nation prepare to graduate this spring, we’re also reminded of the fact that many students don’t make it to graduation day. In fact, 1.2 million students drop out of high school in the U.S every year. This month, we’re highlighting the importance of higher education as our cause of the month. Through our programs like College Prep for teens and College Access for parents, we help people of all ages achieve their college dreams. Stay tuned for their stories!

When my staff and I read David Brooks’ column last month in the New York Times, we were all emailing each other saying “he’s writing about us!” Maddie Parlier, the young single mother profiled in the article, could easily be one of the 50,000 clients that we serve each year.

“There is light at the end of the tunnel!” I often find myself repeating this to our College Prep high school seniors in the midst of college application season, just at the moment when the pressures of school work, college applications, and everything else in their lives becomes overwhelming.
Words of encouragement come easy to most college advisors, and I doubt anyone would be surprised that much of our time is spent in motivation mode. What we often don’t consider, however, is how much college advisors need this type of encouragement and long-term perspective as well. Like our students, we are caught up in essays and deadlines from September to May. The luxury of knowing the warmth of the “light” at the end of this long journey does not spare us from the stress of the season.

When I started writing grants for the College Prep Program, I learned part of the program design included mentors who helped teens write their college essay, research scholarships, and complete financial aid forms. This past fall when the director of the program emailed Educational Alliance staff in search of available mentors, I immediately responded, hoping to use my writing and editing skills for a new purpose and see a glimpse inside one of our programs.

This week’s round-up includes articles on college awareness (at an early age), looking after aging parents (particularly during the holiday season) and new early childhood education policy (promoted by President Obama.) Enjoy!
“Holidays are a Good Time to Assess How Your Elderly Parents are Faring” (AARP)
“Preparing for College, and Kindergarten” (NY Times SchoolBook)
“Obama Unveils New Standards for Early Childhood Education” (U.S. News)

Yesterday was International End Poverty Day, and in honor of this day, we wanted to share a recent NY1 News story about our new College Access and Success program for parents of children who attend our Head Start & Early Head Start programs. We believe that education in the key to ending poverty in New York City (and beyond) and our new program is a step in this direction! Watch the full story here on NY1′s website.

Last month, I offered my advice to high school seniors (and parents) on taking control of the college application process. Now that the school year is in full swing, I’d like to focus on one of the most important, but also most challenging, aspects of the college application: the essay or personal statement.

Did you see us on PIX Morning News today? Our SPARC Program for middle school students — a recent extension of our College Prep Program – was featured in a wonderful segment. The story focuses on the importance of early awareness. We work with students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades on academic enrichment and prep for high school, and eventually college.
