Did you know that over 47,000 children in New York City could lose access to child care and after-school programs next year?  Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed budget includes major cuts to these services — including a 62% reduction in Out of School Time (OST) after-school programs in Manhattan.  As a provider of these crucial programs, we support the Campaign for Children to help raise awareness of these devastating cuts.

Want to help? Take 5 minutes and send a note to Mayor Bloomberg through this simple online form. Thanks for your support!

Today, after school programs across the globe will celebrate Lights on After School day — an event that aims to raise awareness about after school programs and stress the importance of affordable admittance for all. Not only are after school programs a place for kids to go after the bell rings, but they also provide access to healthy meals, help with homework, and most importantly, fun activities that stretch the minds and bodies of the young people who attend them.

A few months ago, while supervising a video shoot, I had a chance to spend two afternoons with the children in our after school programs for students from primarily low-income families.  I have to admit, I was nervous about the project – the plan was to film interviews with the students, and I hadn’t spent much time with kids since my part-time job teaching dance classes in high school!  Would I be able to relate to them?  Would they cooperate with the film crew?

Happy Pride Month to all of our LGBT supporters and friends! All this month, NYC Pride has been hosting a number of events throughout the city – and some major ones are coming up this weekend. Here at the Educational Alliance, we incorporate LGBT awareness into many programs. At the Edgies Teen Center, we talk to teens about acceptance using tools like Think B4 You Speak and provide a creative outlet for LGBT teens to express themselves through the arts. At the 14th Street Y, we’ve signed the “Do Not Stand Idly By” pledge and have launched new LGBT programming for members and the East Village community.

What are you doing to celebrate Pride Month? Anything exciting going on in your community? Let us know in the comments!
